TL;DR: The best Semrush alternative for most businesses in 2026 is SE Ranking — you get daily rank tracking on 2,000 keywords for $129/month, where Semrush’s entry plan tracks 500 keywords for $139. If you want the deepest link index and don’t mind weekly rank updates, Ahrefs is the data-heavyweight pick. And if you mostly need rankings and SERP data, a $5/month DIY stack covers more than most people expect. We priced every option below on July 20, 2026, straight from the vendors’ pricing pages.
We run an SEO agency in Hawaii. Tool subscriptions are one of our largest non-payroll costs, so we re-price this market constantly — not once a year for a listicle. This page is the current state of that research: what each alternative actually costs, what you give up, and which one fits which situation.
Why people leave Semrush in 2026
Semrush is a great product. People don’t leave because it’s bad — they leave because of how the pricing now slices up:
- The AI-search split. Semrush now sells “SEO” ($139/mo) and “SEO + AI Search” tiers ($199–$549/mo). Tracking your brand in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews — the thing everyone wants in 2026 — starts on the $199 Starter tier.
- Keyword math. The $139 SEO plan tracks 500 keywords. That’s $0.28 per tracked keyword per month. SE Ranking’s $129 Core plan tracks 2,000 daily — about $0.06 per keyword.
- Per-user pricing. Additional Semrush seats start at $45/month. Small teams feel this fast.

1. SE Ranking — the best Semrush alternative for most people
SE Ranking is what we point businesses to first, and the reasoning is mostly arithmetic. The Core plan is $129/month and tracks 2,000 keywords with daily updates across 10 projects. To track 2,000 keywords on Semrush you’d need the $299 Pro+ tier (1,500) plus headroom — and on Ahrefs’ $129 Lite plan you get 750 keywords updated weekly.
What stood out when we evaluated it for client work:
- Daily rank tracking on every plan. Weekly updates (Ahrefs’ model below Enterprise) are a real handicap when you’re verifying whether a fix landed.
- AI visibility is included, not upsold. Core includes 100 tracked AI prompts daily — AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity. Semrush gates AI tracking behind its $199+ tiers. We covered the feature in detail in our AI visibility tools roundup.
- Audit capacity. 250,000 pages/month on Core is generous — enough to run every small-business site an agency manages.
- The Agency Pack. +$69/month adds white-label reporting and client-facing tools. Semrush prices agency features per-seat and per-add-on; this is one flat line item.
Honest caveats: only one active session per login (annoying for shared accounts — buy seats, from $16), historical data on Core is capped at 6 months (Growth gets lifetime), and the add-ons bill annually. Our full teardown: SE Ranking review. If you’re the other direction — already on SE Ranking and wondering what else exists — we wrote SE Ranking alternatives too.
2. Ahrefs — best for backlink and content research depth
Nobody seriously disputes Ahrefs’ crawler. If your work is link-building, digital PR, or content gap analysis, its index quality justifies the spend. Lite is $129/month (5 projects, 750 keywords), Standard $249, Advanced $449 — and the $29 Starter plan is a genuinely useful cheap seat for occasional research.
Two things to know before switching: rank updates are weekly on all standard tiers, and Ahrefs famously never discounts (“We never run discounts” is literally in their pricing FAQ — annual billing saves up to 17%, that’s it). Brand Radar, their LLM-visibility product, runs from $199/month standalone or is folded into paid plans with small prompt allowances.
3. The $5 stack — cheapest real alternative
If what you actually use Semrush for is rankings, SERP data, and keyword lookups, you can replace that slice for about the cost of a plate lunch. The core is DataForSEO’s SERP API at roughly $0.0006 per SERP — about $0.60 per 1,000 lookups — plus Google Search Console and a couple of free extensions. You get $1 in free credit to test; minimum top-up is $50 (which lasts months at small volume).
We documented the exact setup, costs, and limitations in the $5 SEO stack. It’s not for everyone — you’re trading UI for API calls — but it’s the honest floor of this market.
4–9. The rest of the field, quickly
- Serpstat — the closest “mini-Semrush”: rank tracking, audit, keyword and competitor research at a lower entry price. Data depth trails the big three; fine at small scale.
- SEO PowerSuite — four desktop apps under a one-time license (plus optional yearly data-updates fee). The anti-subscription pick. Clunkier workflow, unbeatable long-run cost for solo consultants.
- Mangools — the friendliest UI in SEO software. KWFinder is still the nicest keyword tool to actually use. Light on site-audit and link data; right-sized for solopreneurs.
- SpyFu — keyword history and ad-copy archaeology on competitors, strongest on the PPC side. Narrow, cheap, good at what it does.
- Ubersuggest — the lifetime-deal option. Adequate basics; index freshness and depth are the trade-off.
- Moz Pro — steady, education-friendly, and the home of Domain Authority. It hasn’t kept pace on AI-search features, but the fundamentals are solid.
Need a Semrush API alternative specifically?
This is its own decision. Two routes we’ve actually used: DataForSEO for pay-as-you-go SERP, keyword, and backlink endpoints (pennies per call, scales from hobby to production), and SE Ranking’s Data API (standalone from $179/month, annual billing) when you want structured SEO data plus MCP access for AI-assistant workflows. Semrush’s own API only unlocks on its $549 Advanced tier — which is exactly why this question gets asked so much.
Which one should you pick?
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Agency or multi-site owner who wants daily tracking + AI visibility without add-on math | SE Ranking Core/Growth |
| Link-building or content-led SEO where index depth wins deals | Ahrefs |
| Occasional research, tiny budget, some technical comfort | $5 stack or Ahrefs Starter ($29) |
| Hate subscriptions on principle | SEO PowerSuite |
| Just starting out, want simple | Mangools |
| Developer replacing Semrush API calls | DataForSEO / SE Ranking API |
