“Le Grand Cahier” is a suite for String Orchestra by Belarusian composer Alexander Litvinovsky, written for a stage production based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Hungarian-Swiss writer Agota Kristof (1935-2011). Kristof’s book tells the story of two teenage brothers struggling to survive in a Hungarian bordertown during World War II. Originally written in French and published in Switzerland, the critically acclaimed novel has been described as a «post-Nietzschean nightmare written in the style of a children's diary».Alexander Litvinovsky is a Belarusian composer who specializes in string instruments. Since the release of Le Grand Cahier on streaming platforms in 2017, he has been taking the classical world by storm and amassing millions of streams on YouTube and Spotify.Born in Minsk in 1962, Alexander graduated in Musicology from the local State Music College in 1982, and went on to study Composition at the Belarusian State Academy of Music under Prof. Dmitry Smolsky.
